Since the last Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting in February, the project team and consultant have been concentrating on refinements to Alternative "H" (at-grade connection between Hyacinth St. NE and Bill Frey Drive NE), which the SAC selected as their recommended alternative. Within the Claggett Creek Natural Area there is a 20 foot wide path that is reserved for a future walking and bicycling path. The Project Team evaluated the option of using a portion of this reserved path -- which runs parallel to the future extension of Salem Industrial Drive-- for the Alternative “H” Alignment. Earlier this summer, the city of Salem completed more detailed survey of the conservation easement area and the project consultant used this survey data to refine the project maps and cost estimate for Alternative H. (See materials for the July 24th SAC meeting).
The Project Team has also worked to identify improvements to increase the safety, comfort, and visibility of bicyclists and pedestrians crossing Salem Parkway at Hyacinth St/Verda Lane. A range of lower cost striping and signage/signalization improvements have been identified. The Project Team also asked the consultant to prepare a cost estimate for a bridge crossing over Salem Parkway near to the intersection of Verda Lane/Hyacinth Street NE, as well as a multi-use path on the south side of Hyacinth Street, from Salem Parkway to Salem Industrial Drive (the termini of the "H" alignment). The Stakeholder Advisory Committee will discuss these options at their meeting on July 24th.
